Swinging feet = Pulling spine
Take a moment to check how you are sitting. Are you at the front of the chair, or sitting back against the backrest? Are you sitting upright, or slouched like a teenager?
Most people sit with their chairs up too high, causing them to sit at the edge of their seats – after all, that’s where the desk is! However, take a moment and lower your chair down far enough that you can sit all the way back in the chair with your knees level with your hips. Your buttocks and low back should be in contact with the back of the chair. Can you feel how your weight shifts from the back of your thighs to your back and buttocks? If you’ve done this correctly you should feel a distinct relaxation and settling of the spine.
Of course, now you’re saying “But now my computer is up near my chin!” Well, instead of raising up your chair and being uncomfortable, how about bringing the floor up with you? How? Get one or two reams of paper, a phone book or footrest and put it under your feet so that you feel the same when you are sitting up high as you did sitting down low – with buttocks and lower back in contact with the back of the chair and your spine relaxed. Your back will thank you!
